Titanium Dioxide – Safe for Skin?

The mineral known as Titanium Dioxide is commonly found in paints, toothpastes, food coloring, certain mineral makeup brands, and sun-blocks. This natural mineral is safe to use directly against the skin. This is due to the fact that the particles are not small enough to be absorbed by the skin. Titanium dioxide also absorbs UV light at a high capacity, while maintaining a strong structure. In other words, it doesn’t break down under the heat of the sun.

Physically speaking, titanium dioxide is gentle on the skin, leaving no discoloring traces, and it creates a sort of barrier against rays making it a sun-block. When used in cosmetics, this mineral is used as a pigment as well as a thickener. While titanium dioxide in its unadulterated form is harmless, there is a process which can enable the mineral to become harmful, possibly linking a cause to cancer. Certain makeup brands used nano-titanium dioxide, or, micronized titanium dioxide.

During the micronization process the particles are broken down to the point where they are able to penetrate the skin. Once absorbed into the skin, these particles become toxic and pathogenic, potentially able to cause certain types of cancer. The use of micronized titanium dioxide is very rare and our products do not contain this form of the mineral.
